Article: Research on the Impact of Technology on Policing Strategy in the 21st Century
This interesting article, ‘Research on the Impact of
Technology on Policing Strategy in the 21st Century’ simulates my research topic, ‘The Impact of
Technology on the Detection of Violent Crimes’. The article investigates the types of technology that
U.S. law enforcement agencies are acquiring and implementing. The study also delves
into the connection between strategy development and broader organizational changes
within police institutions through the use of technology.
The article discusses that technology has a positive impact on internal operations aspects such as analytical capacities and information-sharing practices but has not created any significant changes in strategies used for preventing and responding to crime and improving public safety. It also discusses the different types of technology that are used in law enforcement as well as issues and the benefits to the policing environment; however, the challenge often lies in the implementation.
The article further highlights the support of technology in law enforcement models. The types of law enforcement models adopted by law enforcement agencies determine the volume and reliance on technology. An agency that emphasises a zero-tolerance approach will likely use less technology than those that focus on predictive and hot spot policing. For instance, law enforcement agencies that adopt predictive and hot spot policing models cannot be effectively operationalised unless they have modern technology.
For this study, the researchers used a sequential mixed-method
approach involving the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data. It
is an exploratory study that uses data collection instruments: a survey
and semi-structured interviews. The
results from the survey identified the police agencies for the semi-structured
interview. Also, the study addresses the gaps in the literature that have not,
at that time, been previously studied in depth.
The article is similar to my study for three main
reasons. Firstly, my research topic focuses on using technology and its
influence on the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. It will not only highlight the
technology adopted by the TTPS but also determine the role it plays in the combating
of violent crimes, particularly the apprehension of the offenders. Secondly, my
research topic would be using a sequential mixed method approach that aligns with the criteria and purpose of the
article under review. Thirdly, the study is also exploratory in Trinidad and
Tobago and other CARICOM countries, thus addressing the lack of significant
research. Overall, the article is not only interesting but
relevant to my subject of research.
